Meet the 2014 Student Teachers

March 9, 2014

Teaching is what the student teachers came here to do, and they were eager to get into the routine of teaching.  They seemed to settle in fast, thanks to the support of their cooperating teachers and the enthusiasm of their students, who were very excited to have American teachers.  Take a few moments to get acquainted with this group, the 3rd cohort of Wilkes University student teachers in Malaysia:

1.  Amanda Bast is seeking certification in Pre-K through Grade 4, Early Childhood, and Special Education.  Under the tutelage of Miss Jeaniene Ganisan, Miss Amanda is teaching Mathematics, Moral Education, Physical Education, Art, English, and English Oral to some very lively and lovable second graders.  Meet Miss Amanda:

2013 GirlPower

January 9, 2014

Our Wilkes student teachers wanted to run a program at Sri Utama that empowered girls to get interested in sports.  So we all put together “GirlPower” and gathered the girls together for an after-school introduction to American sports.

We soon learned that these Sri Utama girls had a lot of energy and spirit!  It was hard to keep up with them!

The program ran for two weeks after school, and we all enjoyed every minute of it.  We hear there’s a request to bring it back this year….. Anybody interested?

Faculty Sessions: KL & JB

March 5, 2013

The student teachers had the rare opportunity to get some professional experience as training facilitators during two faculty sessions–one at the Kuala Lumpur school, and one at the Johor Bahru school.

(Question: Is it fair to have this much fun when you are teaching and training?)

Welcome to Sri Utama, 2013

February 16, 2013

Waking up in a new country is overwhelming, but we all agreed that this place is a beautiful place to be overwhelmed in!

We met with our Principal, Puan (Mrs.) Jamalliah, and the students were matched up with their cooperating teachers.
Meet Pn Jamalliah

The first few days were spent getting acquainted with the routines and facilities of Sri Utama: morning assembly, the library, the hostel, and meals.

So far, so good!

Co-Curriculum at Sri Utama

February 23, 2012

This is assessment week at Sri Utama.  All the students are busy preparing for their class tests and all the teachers are concerned about getting the grades in on time. But everybody needs a break!

Student teachers Marrissa and Felicia join in the field activities during a break from assessments, with SU students and new student Victoria

Sri Utama students pose for the camera

That’s where Co-Curriculum comes in.  For six periods each week, these students get a chance to go outside and get involved in various activities, to blow off some steam and give their brains a break.  As you can see in the photos, the teachers are very much involved in Co-Co, as we like to call it here.

Sports Day is a major event here at Sri Utama.  Everyone is practicing for this show of teamwork, which happens off-campus on March 10.  The students are divided into four houses, Harry Potter style: the Red House, the Green House, the Blue House and the Yellow House.

The houses compete for the highest scores in GymRama, Dance, Soccer, Tug-of-War, Track and Field events.  They get a chance to prepare for the Sports Day events during Co-Co, with the help and encouragement of teachers and fellow students.

In some of these photos you can see how hard they are working to prepare for this all-important day–and how much fun they are having in the process!

Chinese New Year Lion Dance comes to Sri Utama

February 14, 2012

The lions dance to bring good luck to Sri Utama

Imagine our surprise to learn that the lions were visiting Sri Utama!  We were just as thrilled as the Sri Utama students to see these lions dance, play, and climb all over the assembly area.

Tom, Felicia, and Marrissa get a turn at feeding the lions the red envelope with lucky money in it.

And there we are with the school administrators and the performers.

What an experience!  Looks like 2012 is going to be a very lucky year–The Year of the Dragon.
